Checked bags will no longer be fee forAir Canada customers flying coach class between the United States and Canada.
The airline will add a $25 fee for a first checked bag. The change applies to tickets bought on/after Sept. 7 and for travel beginning Oct. 11. The fee for a second checked bag -- $35 each way -- remains unchanged, according to the airline.
"It's the reality of trying to keep our airline on a sustainable economic footing," Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick tells the Toronto Star. "If you look around the world, it's the way carriers are going and dealing with various cost issues."
Air Canada, like most other airlines, waives bag fees on the first two bags for elite-level frequent fliers and for first- and business-class passengers.
Air Canada's two big domestic rivals -- WestJet and Porter -- both allow one checked-bag for free on transborder flights.
Coach-class passengers traveling within Canada may still check one bag at no charge.
And in one other change, Air Canada says "Star Alliance Silver as well as customers who are not a part of Air Canada's Top Tier program holding an Executive Class/First ticket will be able to check two bags at no cost instead of three bags." That change also takes effect for tickets bought beginning Sept. 7 for travel on or after Oct. 11.
American Airlines employee killed at New Mexico airport
Albuquerque police and airport authorities say they're investigating Thursday's accident, but didn't immediately release any details.
American Airlines officials say they're working with investigating agencies to determine how the worker was killed.
The airline says the worker was a longtime company employee, but didn't immediately release the victim's name, age or gender.
Sunport officials say aviation operations weren't affected by the industrial accident and all flights were operating normally.
