Ethiopian Airlines has taken delivery of its fifth Boeing 777-200LR, as part of a programme to increase long-haul services and develop the national capital, Addis Ababa, as a strategic air hub for East Africa.
The airline’s newest Boeing takes to 46 the number of aircraft in the Ethiopian fleet, which is being increased substantially to build capacity both within Africa and on medium and long haul routes into the continent.
Highlighting its new corporate the theme, “The New Spirit of Africa”, Ethiopian has named each of its new B777s after prominent African features – “The Blue Nile”, “Rift Valley”, “Victoria Falls”, “Mount Kilimanjaro” and “The Sahara”.
Ethiopian also has on order another 32 aircraft – 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, 12 Airbus A350-900 long haul twinjets and 10 narrow-bodied Boeing 737-800 aircraft – as part of its global growth programme, intended to make Ethiopian a leading aviation group within Africa by 2025.
From its hub in Addis Ababa, Ethiopian Airlines serves 63 international and 17 domestic destinations with both passenger and freight aircraft.
Its fleet ranges from eight Bombardier Q400 turboprop airliners and 10 Boeing 737-700 and 737-800 jets to long range Boeing 757, 767 and 777 aircraft.
