Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport announced Sept. 7 that weekly cargo flights have increased 40 percent this year compared to 2010, with overseas carriers leading the way.
Seoul, South Korea-based Asiana Airlines Inc. has added three cargo flights per week, bringing its total to seven.
Singapore Airlines Ltd. has added one flight per week for a total of four, while Shanghai’s China Cargo Airlines Co. Ltd. has doubled capacity from 3 to 6 flights.
Cargolux Airlines International S.A. of Luxembourg has also increased capacity to five flights per week.
The airport’s Aviation General Manager Louis Miller attributed the growth to Atlanta’s beneficial position as a port-of-entry to the U.S. market.
“More than 80 percent of U.S. consumers can be reached in a day’s trucking from Hartsfield-Jackson,” he said in a news release. “This is a tremendous advantage for businesses looking to distribute products quickly, efficiently and inexpensively.”
The increased cargo business is to bring an estimated $60 to $72 million per year to Atlanta and the Southeast.
