Opponents of a plan by Delta Air Lines and US Airways to swap takeoff and landing slots in Washington, D.C. and New York are speaking out.
In a filing to the Department of Transportation Monday, Airports Council International - North America, a trade group that represents airports, argued that the slots are "community assets" not subject to change for the sake of the airlines' pursuit of profit.
Delta is proposing to transfer its 42 slot pairs at Washington Reagan National and a cash payment to US Airways in exchange for US Airways' 132 slot pairs at New York LaGuardia. With air space crowded in the two cities, the slots at the airports are restricted and airlines must trade them to grow.
"ACI-NA has advocated that slots should be treated as community assets that are used to benefit the airport/community of their location, and not the airlines," said ACI-NA President Greg Principato. "As such, the interests of the operating airport proprietor should be considered in evaluating the treatment of a petition by air carriers for the exchange of slots."
Southwest Airlines, JetBlue and Virgin America also filed objections to the DOT, according to Bloomberg. The proposed transaction will have "severe negative impact" on competition, Southwest said.
U.S. regulators tentatively approved the deal in July.
